What we dislike about the school
- Lessons are 45 minutes long, which is shorter than in other schools.
Location: Select English Cambridge is located in the historic English city of Cambridge, on the River Cam, in eastern England. The school is on Hills Road, where students have supermarkets, eateries and a direct route to Cambridge train station, within walking distance. Several of the city's attractions are also in the area, with the Cambridge University Botanic Garden and the Fitzwilliam Museum, both a moment's walk away. Students are well situated to be able to enjoy all that the city has to offer. Attractions such as Cambridge Market Square, the University Museum of Zoology, and several parks and spaces along the River Cam, are all within a 20-minute walk of the school.
Course selection: Select English Cambridge provides high-quality English tuition for students of all ages and levels. In addition to General English programmes taught over various schedules and intensities, the school gives numerous specific learning programmes. For adults, or students aged 16+, there are Exam Preparation courses (IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE) and fully immersive residential summer programmes (age restrictions apply). For junior students, Select English Cambridge offers a range of immersive summer courses, with various options for accommodation in residence or homestay.
Getting around: The train to Central London is around 45 minutes from Cambridge train station and runs every 30 minutes, 7 days a week. The school is also close to bus routes and is very much within walking distance of many of the city's sites of interest.

“Nothing in particular. If I had to say only one thing, the office manager could have been a little more responsive to my e-mails during our pre-arrival correspondence. But after meeting her, I recognized that she was very friendly and wonderful, and provided me with lots of support!”
Insider tip: “Grammar terms are also taught in English (past perfect, etc.). Therefore, if you lightly review the grammar you learned at junior and senior high school in Japan, you may be able to understand the lessons faster and greatly improve your ability even during your short stay.”

"Prepared or cooked meals themselves. I also bought most of the vegetables and fruit myself. Host family very nice, but hardly spoke to me. Never saw them in the morning, they often came home late in the evening. Mould in washing machine, black mould in bathroom, mattress quite worn (some metal springs noticeable). House not well ventilated, which increases mould.

"The facilities are excellent considering the price. There was one shared kitchen for every six private bedrooms. The size of the private room is about 4 tatami mats and the shower room is small, but that's normal for a student's room. The housing experience is very depending on your neighbors. Fortunately, in my case, I didn't face any terrible noise or people who used the kitchen in a messy way, and I was able to spend a comfortable time.

I am looking for a one week-long English course in Cambridge for my 15-year-old daughter with transfer from the airport and accommodation in residence and/or family.
“As your daughter will be 15 years old, Select English can offer her a Cambridge Junior course (for students aged 14-17). This normally lasts two weeks, but she can also book one week. The course price for one week is half the price for two weeks.
You can choose between residential accommodation (single, double or triple room) without meals or a host family (double room) with half board.
This program offers free transfers to/from Heathrow and Stansted airports. Arrival is on Sunday and departure is on Saturday. This free transfer can only be used for flights scheduled between 09:00 and 17:00.”

Nationals from USA do not require a visa to study short term courses up to 180 days. A valid passport and an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is required to enter the UK. The application for the ETA is done online https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta. The answer is expected within 3 working days, costing GBP 20. The ETA allows multiple entries in the country for up to 6 months for a maximum of 2 years or until the passport used when applying expires.
