Venue: St Giles International Junior Centre, Leeds, is located 20 miles outside of Leeds in the village of Ackworth in West Yorkshire, near Pontefract. Held at Ackworth School the programmes offered focus on combining English language learning with sport. Ackworth School is a Quaker boarding school, founded in 1779, and the original building is a type I listed historical building. Ackworth dates back to the medieval era and some monuments from the period remain there still, including a Plague Stone where vinegar was kept for sterilising coins in an attempt to curb the spread of the disease.
The programme: St Giles International Junior Centre at Ackworth School offers students an authentic boarding school experience and expert sports coaching. Whether students choose football or the general sports option, they each receive 5 half-days of sports coaching per week alongside their 20 weekly English lessons. The multi-sport option includes a mix from the following sports: swimming, tennis, hockey, netball, cricket, and of course, football.
Activities: Outside of class time and sports coaching, students at St Giles International Junior Centre Yorkshire also benefit from an evening social programme and one full-day excursion per week to nearby cities including Manchester or York and football stadium tours. A weekly highlight of the programme which takes full advantage of the extensive grounds is the BBQ and garden party.
Getting there: The closest major international airport is Manchester Airport (MAN) which is an hour and a half away from the school. London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is three and a half hours away.
School chain: St Giles Schools Languages Ltd has numerous schools worldwide, offering junior, adult and senior students quality English tuition and student care for over 65 years. Originating in Soho, London, St Giles now has schools in England, Canada and the US. St Giles schools are fully regulated and accredited by the British Council in the UK and Language Canada in Canada. They are also members of EnglishUK.
