Location: Piccola Università Italiana - Le Venezie (Trieste) is located in the historic city of Trieste, in northeastern Italy. With vast Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences, the capital of Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia region has a lot to offer in terms of sites of interest in addition to beautiful surroundings. The school is housed in the heart of the city, a short 200m from the Piazza Unità d'Italia and within walking distance of attractions such as the Roman Theatre of Trieste, the Revoltella Museum, Piazza della Borsa and much more. The sea and the coastline are just a stone's throw from the school's front door.

Course selection: The school provides courses suitable for students of all levels and many interests. In addition to General Italian programmes available over several schedules and intensities, combination programmes of Italian and specific subjects, such as scuba diving, painting, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and cooking, are also readily available throughout the year. Fantastic programmes for active senior students (60+) are also readily available at certain times of the year, in addition to programmes tailored to the needs of Erasmus+ students. One-to-one and two-to-one programmes are available in conjunction with or independently from any other programme.

Course B refers to the school’s Complete course, which is the traditional group format. The class sizes are kept small at just 8 participants, giving each student easy access to their teacher when they would like to ask questions and resolve any language obstacles. All learners on this course are assigned to a group that most corresponds to their current Italian language ability, which is done via a placement test that takes place at the beginning of the course.

If students cannot be placed in an appropriate group due to a lack of students at their level, then they may receive an adapted form of private tuition, in exchange for reducing the total number of class hours.

Edmund 5.0
"very good, good ambiance, to be recommended"
Marianne 5.0
"I think the implementation of courses 60 plus is very good. The interests are then roughly the same. I thought the excursions were good, if I went to a second course next year I might choose the variant without a program but in the same period and then take part in the leisure program depending on the circumstances (it might be the same excursions)."

“I especially enjoyed the classes and the friendliness of the instructors, as well as working in small groups. We were a great team; the working atmosphere was fantastic and collaborative. After class, we went out to eat together and continued speaking Italian, which was very beneficial for everyone. For these reasons, I would definitely recommend Piccola Universita and would definitely come back myself.”
“The rooms are a little too warm, and the fan is too loud. The rooms were also too close together, so it was hard to hear the listening exercises clearly, and it was difficult to concentrate on writing exercises because you could hear the class from the other room. It wasn’t always a problem, but sometimes it was.

The breaks are too short. You need 30 minutes to go to a café together, use the restroom (there’s only one restroom), etc., especially if the first class runs over, which leaves even less break time.

The online language test was excessively strict for me—no smiles or warm-up—which unfortunately caused me to freeze up. A little friendliness or a brief explanation at the start about how the conversation would proceed would have given me personally more confidence and clarity and broken the ice.”

“Our teachers, Valentina and Lara, were really great. They were very kind and patient. The grammar and conversation classes were always well-coordinated and very well-structured overall. I was able to brush up on the Italian I had learned a long time ago, and I now feel much more confident speaking it. The ladies at the front desk were also extremely kind and helpful.”
“The driver (Andrea) on the excursions is an absolutely terrible driver. Even with the GPS, he got lost on the way back from the trip to Palmanova (which he claims is his hometown). The same thing happened on the trip to Duino. I also got the impression that he has no idea how to use the GPS. Maybe someone should explain how it works to him.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: I took the A1 course and was very satisfied because it reviewed important grammar points.

“Teachers who are very student-centered, highly detailed and well-structured grammar lessons, plenty of necessary review to reinforce the material.”
“The rooms are cramped; the second part, focusing on conversation, should have been more interactive – I didn’t have enough opportunity to speak. This was partly because the language level was very high, meaning I lacked the vocabulary to express myself more fluently on the topic.
The topic could have been prepared in advance with an introductory text containing the necessary vocabulary, which participants could then refer to when expressing their opinions. The activities planned for the day could have been announced more clearly!”
Quality of teaching / language progress: As I’d already done the 60+ course last year, some of the excursions were a repeat for me.
Other comments: The reception staff are always happy to help with anything!!

“Everyone is very nice and helpful - teachers and "students".”
“Some of the rooms are very small, and you often feel exhausted during lessons because the air quality is so poor. The monitor is positioned so high up that you end up with a stiff neck after a while.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Grammar was too hard for me at first, but in the 3rd week it got easier.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Unfortunately, the conversation class in the first week was not good. Due to a change of classroom, from then on I could only look at the backs of my classmates, frontal teaching, the teacher did not deal with this problem appropriately.

“Very friendly staff. The level of knowledge is determined in advance in writing and verbally online. This means that the courses can start on day 1. Very good introduction on the 1st day.”
“Course participants changed every week. In the first week I joined a group of 5 women who had already been learning in this group for 2-3 weeks. Due to the weekly change, it is hardly possible to build on skills that have just been acquired. I had booked an over 60s course on the assumption that the course would be offered for older people who learn at a slower pace. Three of the participants were between 23 and 35 years old. The school was so busy in the first week that my husband (beginner) had lessons in the morning and I (A2) in the afternoon. It wasn't so nice, but it was okay.
In my course, many participants and the teacher talked at the same time in the first week. During group work, people spoke too loudly, which made it very difficult for me to concentrate and - although my hearing was still OK - I could hardly understand my partner at times.”

"The room in the residence was nice, but dark and above all very noisy towards the corridor. A thick curtain in front of the door would help. The accommodation with the host family was very nice, but unfortunately I had almost no contact with my hostess. Some days I didn't even see her. That had been described differently. So I didn't get to practise Italian or learn anything about Italian culture.

"My host's home was immaculate and she was lovely. I loved having to speak Italian the whole time I was there. The only thing I didn't like was being fairly far away from the school. When I had a few breaks during the day between classes, the host's house was too far away so I couldn't just go and rest for a few hours before I went back to the programme.

"The room was small and had no window to the outside but only into an air shaft of the house. Therefore, hardly any fresh air came in, and when other residents smoked on the floors below, the smoke came into the room. Sometimes the noise of other residents in the middle of the night. Overall, the accommodation was very clean and well maintained and the location was perfect.

"I had a room with a private bathroom in the school's shared apartment and was very happy. I was lucky with my roommates; it was very harmonious. The room was a bit dark, as the windows faced the inner courtyard (light well), but it was quiet. I would book the room again anytime :)

"The rooms with bathroom only had a window to the light well (no courtyard!), the rooms with shared bathroom probably only had windows to the street. All in all, the rooms are very bright. Self-catering is possible, but some things are unclear at the beginning: who buys what, e.g. toilet paper, soap, dishwasher tablets. Who takes out the rubbish and to where?

"Great room. The bathroom was often busy at peak times. Otherwise everything was great.

The evaluations by students after they complete a course is excellent. The discount for using your website is also a great incentive. It also would be wonderful if the website would include more cities and a bigger selection of schools in each city.

Just keep up the good work. The organization is excellent, so that even less experienced travellers would feel ok to come to China. I also felt really good in the host family, they were really great!
