Location: LTL Mandarin School is centrally located in Chengdu City, housed within an office building near Tianfu Square. There are a smattering of cafes, restaurants, and clothing stores in the streets near the school. The building has a complex entrance system, with two different entrances that access different floors; the main entrance is located in the building's backyard.
Getting around: There are ample bus stops around the streets of the school that go to various places throughout the city. The core of the city is 13km from LTL Mandarin School. This is a 25-minute car ride.
Local attractions: Most of Chengdu’s attractions are to the north of the city. The shopping street of Chunxi Road and the Wenshu Yuan Monastery are in the heart of Chengdu. To the northwest of the city is the Jinsha Site Museum Tourist Center. From the school, this is 20 minutes by car. The nearest metro station is “Chengdu Second People’s Hospital.”
Course structure: LTL Mandarin School has immersive Mandarin programmes as both a group or individual structure.
Survival kit: The school has created a package to help students settle into the city. These can be brought by the school on arrival. “The best part is the very young but professional teachers. Actually, I can only speak for my own teacher (24 years old), but he acted like a teacher with 35 years of experience, even though the school had “only” asked him to be a substitute teacher. Both his technical skills (language, English/Chinese, language evolution, history) and his emotional intelligence were outstanding.”
“At LTL, I have my doubts as to whether even beginners at HSK 1/2 level can be integrated into group lessons. The classrooms are very small, and, as was usually the case for me, the small classroom is sandwiched between two other classes, which can be quite disruptive. What’s more, the break room is right next to these classrooms, which also causes quite a bit of noise. Around 30% of the lessons also took place in the ‘coffee restaurant’, which was also accompanied by a higher noise level. So, overall, it’s not ideal, unless you’re a student in the loudest and largest class. I would actually have expected April not to be peak season yet, but the school certainly has a structural problem there.”
Insider tip: “Next time, I’d download some helpful YouTube videos or use offline mode. There’s so much going on in town – language classes, badminton lessons, cookery courses, TCM classes – there’s a lot on offer.”

Other comments: From what I've heard, Chengdu seems to be more of a flexible branch campus. The teachers made a really good impression, both professionally and socially.

“All the teachers are very friendly and helpful. They gave lots of tips about Chengdu. I particularly enjoyed the (optional) lunch together during the lunch break. Due to the good location of the school, there are many small restaurants in the neighbourhood that are worth visiting. (Bu la!)
My teacher (Leona) taught me a lot in a short space of time and also found a few mistakes that I like to make. Hats off to her!
I also enjoyed the activities after class. A bike tour through Chengdu, a weekend trip to Chongqing. It was great!

"Chengdu is a huge city, yet it has plenty of green spaces, parks and rivers and offers a wide choice of hotels. The breakfast at my hotel was so generous and good that you only need a light dinner or lunch, and this is available cheaply on almost every street corner, including near the school. Parks and street food are very close by. If possible, arrive in the city in good time; check out the hotel; then visit the host family and see which option is best, if the school allows it. What I didn’t like was that the host families were a long way away, and the headteacher downplayed the downsides, but these are important for a successful school experience (saving time, healthy and wholesome food, etc.). That’s why, after two weeks, I switched from a host family to a hotel – it wasn’t exactly easy!
