“The staff were friendly and approachable, and the classes with the teacher were dynamic. The activities, though few, are useful for meeting other students and practicing, as well as getting to know the city. The school is right next to a park. And overall, the atmosphere at the school.”
“If I had to point out a downside, the intensive course is geared toward an exam, so they do various mock exams almost every day. Even if that isn’t my goal in this course, it does help you assess your knowledge without the pressure of actually having to sit an exam, as in my case. On some days there were 15 students in class, and the space is limited.
The residence they offer when their own is full is fine and either new or renovated, but it’s in an industrial area and about a 10-minute walk from the tram, which takes you in two stops to Tannerstr., where Kärstner Kolleg is at the end of the street. From the Gästehaus, it’s about a half-hour walk at a brisk pace.”
Insider tip: “You feel comfortable; the atmosphere is very friendly because it’s a small school.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Above all, it’s preparation for the level exam, but you move forward with the book, which the academy also lends you if you don’t take the full course.
Other comments: I recommend it

“The teachers and lecturers are knowledgeable and approachable, making it easy for students to seek help and engage.”
“Classes sometimes feel overbooked, and there are too many students for the teachers to adequately care for each individual. As a result, they cannot spend enough time with students who may be struggling to learn.”
Insider tip: “Reaching fluency in a language is not an overnight process. If you think that simply attending class every day for a year will make your language skills comparable to those of a native speaker, that's unrealistic. It takes time and patience to truly develop proficiency.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: My teacher is really knowledgeable, and overall, my experience has been quite positive. The school administration is also very helpful with any problems I encounter.
Other comments: After almost eight months of study, I have learned a lot, not only about the German language but also about their culture. Overall, my stay in Dresden has been great!

“Student support was excellent. There is a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The staff, administrative and teaching, showed flexibility and responsiveness to make the learning experience as successful as possible. Both Katrin and Patricia are excellent teachers.”
“The physical facilities are okay, but a bit 'down at heels.' Not enough to affect the overall positive experience.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: It is indeed 'intense' to concentrate 4.5 hrs plus homework but the classes were well-managed. The time was carefully and consistently structured to vary the tempo and demands.
Other comments: Very warm, personal environment. Not 'institutional' or business-dominated.

Accommodation: 4.0

"The residence they offer, when their own is fully booked, is good and new or renovated, but it’s in an industrial area and about a 10-minute walk from the tram, which takes you in two stops to Tannerstr., where Kärstner Kolleg is at the end of the street. From the Gästehaus, it’s a half-hour walk at a brisk pace. The Gästehaus hosts an interesting mix of people; mostly young people doing internships at companies. Sunday check-in is very late: there’s no reception until 7 p.m. And Saturday check-out is until 8 a.m.! If you ask, they can let you store your belongings for a few hours in case, like me, you’re leaving later.

"Homestay was in an interesting house. Delightful couple. The room looked spectacular but in practical terms it was not so good. No window coverings. Bright light all night. Lights operated by mobile phone which was cumbersome and irritating. The apartment at the school was very good. I was told on the first day a new bed would be installed. This did not happen. Existing couch was very old. However overall I enjoyed the space and privacy.

Questions and answers about Kästner Kolleg

Can I book accommodation at Kästner Kolleg for 20 weeks?
“We can organise accommodation in a shared flat or with a host family for up to eight weeks. During this time, the student has the opportunity to look for accommodation locally. After consultation, it would also be possible to extend the accommodation (if this is desired by both parties)”

What is the difference between booking a host family at Kästner Kolleg and a shared flat?
“The biggest difference between a shared flat and a host family is probably that the family connection is somewhat closer due to the breakfast provided. Otherwise, there is not much difference.”

Which guests live in the Kästner Kolleg flat residence and guest house?
“Our flat residence is a flat with two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, shared kitchen and shared living/dining area. A maximum of three Kästner Kolleg students live there at the same time (1 double room and 1 single room).
The guest house, which we also offer, is more of a student residence. However, not only Kästner Kolleg students live there, but also other trainees.

What document will I receive for applying for a visa if I pay the deposit?

The evaluations by students after they complete a course is excellent. The discount for using your website is also a great incentive. It also would be wonderful if the website would include more cities and a bigger selection of schools in each city.
