What we like about the school
  • Rich cultural programme including guided tours and culinary experiences.
  • Palermo (Sicily) is one of the top destinations our students liked most
What we dislike about the school
  • Younger students should consider that the average age of students at this school is significantly higher than at most other schools.

Venue: Culturforum Italian Language and Culture is located in Palermo, the capital city of Sicily. The school is housed in a modern building in the centre of Palermo, across the street from a Venetian-Gothic villa and a five-minute walk away from Teatro Massimo, the city’s opera house. The school is a short walk from the port and only fifteen minutes’ walking from the historic city centre.

The school: Originally founded in Cefalù in 2000, the school moved to Palermo in 2020 in order to expand the cultural options for their students. Classes are small at Culturforum and they like it that way. After more than twenty years of growth, while the school has expanded, the classes remain small in order to provide a more personal approach to learning. Culturforum believes in active participation and from the very first class, students will be immersed in the language.

Getting there: Sicily is serviced by three airports: in Palermo, Trapani, and Catania. The Palermo airport is the largest and closest of the three and has several transfer options to Palermo Central Station: train, bus or shared taxi. Travel time from Palermo International Airport (PMO) is around an hour. Public transport transfers are also available from the Trapani and Catania airports though not as frequently.

Student reviews about "Standard Course + Island of Contrasts: History of Sicily" at Culturforum Italian Language and Culture
Masaharu 4.0
"The 'History of Sicily' course was incredibly enriching, particularly since I was the only student. Although the required language proficiency was high, I had read many books on Western history, so I had no trouble following the content. It was fascinating to discover how the history of Italy, as seen from a Sicilian perspective, differed significantly from the history I had previously studied. This class offered a truly engaging and interesting new perspective."

“The lessons were informative and of very high quality.”
“The afternoon activities were a joke. In the first week, there weren’t many students there, so the school kept saying that not enough had signed up for the activities. There always had to be more than five, which wasn’t possible at all. The prices were also far too high. EUR 40 for a course where you could learn Sicilian hand signals. The cooking course was EUR 50 – it was supposed to include making your own pasta and cannoli. It didn’t happen in the two weeks....”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Lorena was an absolutely wonderful teacher.

“My goal was neither grammatical exercises nor exams. My goal was to communicate with Italian-speaking people. This school helped me tremendously in this regard. Exactly what I was looking for!”
“The weather, but the school can't do anything about that!”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Perfect for me.

“The class I joined had a diverse mix of six students: two from France, one from the US, one from Australia, one from Switzerland, and myself from Japan. I believe the timing was a big factor, but the ages ranged from the late 40s to the late 60s, which was perfect for me. I had direct lessons with three different instructors, all of whom were highly experienced professionals. They used a variety of teaching materials, which kept the lessons engaging and never boring.”
“The school had originally planned four events from Tuesday to Friday, but unfortunately, none of them took place due to low enrollment. I had signed up for three of the four, and I later heard from several other students who said they would have participated if they had known about the activities sooner. It seems that better communication regarding event promotion might encourage higher sign-ups in the future.”
Insider tip: “Just like at other schools, the age range of the students likely changes significantly depending on the time of year. During the summer, the average age of participants seems to drop quite a bit. It’s definitely something to keep in mind when deciding when to enrol.

Also, Europeans, in general, are very interested in Japanese culture. If you talk about Japanese culture, lifestyle, or social issues, everyone listens with great interest and asks many questions. I highly recommend preparing some topics about these subjects in advance so you can discuss them easily.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: The 'History of Sicily' course was incredibly enriching, particularly since I was the only student. Although the required language proficiency was high, I had read many books on Western history, so I had no trouble following the content. It was fascinating to discover how the history of Italy, as seen from a Sicilian perspective, differed significantly from the history I had previously studied. This class offered a truly engaging and interesting new perspective.
Other comments: While the school lacked facilities outside of the classrooms and there were no events during my stay, I was extremely satisfied with the school's location, the quality of the teachers, and the diverse variety of students.

“Reception and getting to know each other on the first day, another placement test, participants tended to be adults, shared room, city tour and especially great - the cookery course!!! (Even though I'm cooking a lot at the moment), very friendly staff.”
“Location at a noisy crossroads and no insulation with windows - very disruptive during lessons. Organisation was a bit chaotic.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Good.

very nice teachers (very familiar)
The excursions are very varied (but also expensive)”
“I haven't made much progress in my learning, I've even been bored in the last few days. In addition, there were hardly any explicit grammar lessons. I was used to something different from my previous course.”

“Very devoted, supportive and skillful teachers. Do their most to help us understand and express ourselves in Italian. Spreading a good and comforting feeling at school. We are encouraged to talk about and share our own backgrounds and experiences and compare it with life in Italy and other countries. Small classes with different levels of knowledge of Italian let us talk a lot and practice. Good exercises.”

The evaluations by students after they complete a course is excellent. The discount for using your website is also a great incentive. It also would be wonderful if the website would include more cities and a bigger selection of schools in each city.

The service of languagecourse.net is great, I booked already 3 schools and I can highly recommend it. In fact, I tell everybody I meet on my journey in South America about this website and how well everything is organized.

Just keep up the good work. The organization is excellent, so that even less experienced travellers would feel ok to come to China. I also felt really good in the host family, they were really great!
