What we dislike about the school
- Older students should consider that the average age of students at the school is significantly younger than at most other schools.
Location: Samiad Summer School Reading is held at The Oratory School, outside of Reading, in the Oxfordshire countryside. Less than an hour away from London’s Heathrow Airport, The Oratory School is a private, co-educational Catholic school founded in the mid 1840s. The school grounds are vast and green and may well have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien in his work; he wrote a portion of The Hobbit at the school.
Campus: The current campus has been in operation since the school relocated during WWII. It is one of only four schools in the UK where Real Tennis is played and the tennis court has been used for professional world championships. The royal family has often visited the school to play against both members of the school staff and its students.
Facilities: Students attending the Samiad summer programme at The Oratory School stay in the modern, on-campus boarding houses and use the many sports facilities which include: a 9-hole golf course; an indoor swimming pool; real tennis courts and lawn tennis courts; indoor sports complex; and all-weather pitches; as well as the theatre and drama studio.
Excursions: One of the highlights of the Samiad summer programme at The Oratory School is an overnight stay at Warwick Castle, a twelfth century medieval stone castle on the River Avon, which began as a wooden fort built by William the Conqueror in 1068. Other off-campus excursions can include: a visit to Oxford complete with a punting tour; a sightseeing trip to London; and a visit to Thorpe Park.

“I had a good time and met people I hope to see again. As a suggestion for the future I can say that I missed the presence of male peers with whom to exchange ideas and share the experience abroad. I think that at the time of registration, if there are alternative possibilities of course, one should give the possibility to know the number and ages of the participants of a given week. But these are small things, I had a great time.”
