What we like about the school
  • In addition to language lessons, programmes include visits to museums, food in traditional Greek taverns, presentations on Greek culture and watching movies.
  • Small class sizes
  • Excellent rating of student apartments
    4.5
What we dislike about the school
  • Younger students should consider that the average age of students at this school is significantly higher than at most other schools.
  • Nationality mix could be more balanced. 55% of students are from Germany

The school operates in a renovated residence and offers three air-conditioned classrooms : the Green Room – six students max, the Orange room – five students max and the White Room – 5 students max, as well as computer access in each classroom and free Wi-Fi. In addition, there is a small auxiliary teaching area "Αδης" on the ground floor, especially for students with mobility issues.

There is also a spacious kitchen with a refrigerator, a filter coffee maker, an espresso coffee maker, a selection of tea flavours and, of course, a gas fire for making the famous Greek coffee. Coffee is an important part of life, so we make sure that we have a selection of different kinds of coffee for almost every taste, but since coffee should always be accompanied by some kind of sweet or savory snack, we have thought of that as well. So there is always something to nibble on with your coffee.

There is also a cosy balcony for our breaks where students drink coffee/ tea, watch the people walk by, get to know the rest of the students and the teachers of the school, and chat about everything.

“What I really liked was the small class size; for example, in my class there were only two of us, which gave everyone plenty of opportunity to speak. My teacher, Marina, put me at ease right away, which allowed me to speak Greek as well as I could.”

“All the staff were really very friendly.”
“You can't call it a ‘school’, that would be an exaggeration. It was more like a converted flat. It was very cold there!”
Quality of teaching / language progress: For example, there was no feedback. There were also no objectives for the course.
School's reply: As stated on our website "The school operates in a renovated residence and offers three air-conditioned classrooms ". The air conditioners are fully maintained and operational and are generally on. If a student required more or less heat, they can let us know and we can adjust the temperature accordingly.

“My teacher Eleni was wonderful, very personable, taught me everything well, she also speaks great German, the chemistry was right and I even happened to have private lessons because there were few students at the time and we all had different levels. All the other teachers and the teacher Effie are also very nice. The other students too. I felt very comfortable there! The week went by far too quickly. Now I just have to put what I've learnt into practice...”

“Teacher wonderful, admin very helpful.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: It was a pity (although unavoidable) that the course had to be shortened because of holidays decided by government at such short notice - not the schools fault

“Very nice, competent and helpful teachers”
“A little more modernity would be a small improvement. Due to the large number of different participating countries, a lot has to be explained in English, so that you often speak English yourself rather than trying to say it in Greek. Of course, everyone is responsible for themselves.”

“Good location (only 500 m from the hotel); good leadership by director Efi; good teachers and contacts possible with fellow students.”
“My number of hours have been reduced (in accordance with the agreements between the organization and the school; the number of extra activities could have been slightly more. (Those that were there were very good (dance / museum visit / dinner at the end...)”
Insider tip: “Social activities discussed above.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Very good; Too bad that number had to be reduced due to my (high) level.
Other comments: Everything depends on the management; not good in Athens due to slow management, fine here.

“The teachers are all very friendly and accommodating, there are always cookies and snacks available during break and you can always get a coffee or water. There is air conditioning in every room and the teaching is competent and well thought out.”
“I didn't really like the book that was used there, it's not structured strictly and is often incomprehensible, the instructions are only in Greek and there are no solutions at the back of the book. This makes the book not suitable for working alone at home, which I thought was a shame. I didn't take it home with me because it is very thick and heavy. On the other hand, the vocabulary list at the back of the book is very good. Otherwise I have nothing to complain about!”

“Nice competent teacher Maria, coffee/tea with sweets well taken care of, enthusiastic team, huge amount of information on Greek language. Especially a lot of grammar. And the pace was high. Private lesson because there was only 1 other student. Classroom atmosphere was good. Instructive homework.”
“Discussion point with team after week of classes paid for 40 hours of lessons. According to school academic class schedule of 50 minutes. First week from 9am to 12.30pm and second week 9am to 1.30pm with 10-minute break. Friday 14 April 2023 turned out to be no class. This could have been more clearly confirmed by the school. There were no additional afternoon activities and excursions. On the Wednesday 12 April 2023 to informed tomorrow is my last day then had lunch with other groups which was fine. Museum was mock 3D half-hour film with 15 minutes of that on Greek history. I had lunch and dinner on my own for a fortnight. It was a pity that doing a lot of things in a group was not possible. This meant that speaking Greek remained underexposed. Furthermore, the classroom was not cleaned once in two weeks.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: See positive and negative comments earlier.
Other comments: Learned a lot but not yet able to put into practice what I learnt in terms of speaking. Reading progressed well though.

“Enthusiastic teacher, but a lot of focus on grammar. Not much speech or culture.”
“Too poorly lit, too loud. We had the door open because it was so hot, but there were motorbikes and noisy traffic outside so we didn't always hear what we were saying. No air conditioning so lucky it was early summer. Would not recommend anyone to study later in June-July-August.”
Insider tip: “Think in advance if there is an activity you would like to do in your free time. The school/Effie can help book you in. For example, I didn't know she could arrange dance lessons (Greek dance). Too bad, because I would have liked to go to that. None of this is included in the school's offer, you have to pay extra for it.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: No testing was done initially. We were few students and were divided into two groups.
Other comments: Friendly and service-minded staff. Effie who runs the school is fantastic!

“Personal attention. There was a real effort to teach me something.”
“At the same time, private lessons also have disadvantages. It is very demanding and I would have preferred to have classmates to practise with and to do something outside the lessons.
It would be advisable if the teachers would bring the different students into contact with each other, without any obligations.
Fortunately, I did meet a fellow student, but that was entirely my own initiative.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: I would like to have conversation lessons in particular. Maybe also listening exercises with headphones.

“The teachers and the principal are very warm and know how to put people at ease. The two teachers are very competent and very invested in their work. The discussions were very rich and I made good progress.”
“Because of the health situation, I found myself the only student the second week and even if the private lesson went very well I regretted not being in contact with other students. In addition there was no activity and the proposals on the site had played in my choice for this school.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: complete but I regretted that there were not in the margin of the lessons authentic documents, adapted of course, like rhymes, small poems, advertisements, cooking recipes, etc. The examples are too often disconnected from a context which makes it possible to understand the overall meaning.

Questions and answers about Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great

We are three friends interested in booking a Greek program, but we have different language levels. Are there groups for students of all levels?
“The Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great in Chania has set fixed starting dates for students of all levels. On the first day of the course, the school conducts a language assessment test to determine your exact language level. Let us know what your preferred start date is and we can provide you with more information.”
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 26, 2023
Does the language school work with a desktop or is it more convenient to bring your own laptop or tablet?
“She can bring her own device. We have a CD-ROM, which can also be installed in a device if the student likes.”
Irini Chryssikopoulou, Communication Officer from School of Greek Language & Culture “Alexander the Great" - Mar 01, 2023
What language is mainly spoken during classes?
“All the lessons are happening in Greek. We only use the English language as a helping tool for beginner students during their first 2-3 lessons. We have students from all over the world and we work on the basis that no one speaks a specific language.”
Irini Chryssikopoulou, Communication Officer from School of Greek Language & Culture “Alexander the Great" - Mar 01, 2023
Is there a restaurant at the hotel?
“There is a rooftop terrace that serves as a breakfast buffet in the morning and a cocktail bar in the evening. There is also a cafeteria in the reception area. Unfortunately, there is no restaurant.”
Irini Chryssikopoulou, Communication Officer from School of Greek Language & Culture “Alexander the Great" - Dec 12, 2022

Perhaps a host family is totally fine for learning Greek, but how does that work?
“I normally highly recommend a host family, but schools in Greece actually hardly offer this option. You can look into living with a teacher and taking classes, but that comes with another price tag: Influent.

If you would like to take lessons at a local school in Crete, I recommend booking a course at Hellenic Language School Alexander the Great, combined with hotel accommodation. You can book the accommodation through the school, or book it yourself. ”

The evaluations by students after they complete a course is excellent. The discount for using your website is also a great incentive. It also would be wonderful if the website would include more cities and a bigger selection of schools in each city.

The service of languagecourse.net is great, I booked already 3 schools and I can highly recommend it. In fact, I tell everybody I meet on my journey in South America about this website and how well everything is organized.
Gabriele Ragger verified client
I am very satisfied. I found more/relevant information on your webpage than on the school's website itself. It is the cheapest offer. I'm going to book my next course on your site soon.

Just keep up the good work. The organization is excellent, so that even less experienced travellers would feel ok to come to China. I also felt really good in the host family, they were really great!
