Location: GLS - German Language School Berlin is located in the culturally rich and historic city of Berlin, Germany. The school is housed in the Kollwitzliez area of Berlin. There are many cafés, eateries, shops and various attractions such as the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark, the Museum at the Kulturbrauerei, the Kulturbrauerei Museum and several green areas within walking distance of the school. The Anne Frank Center is within a 25-minute walk of the school's front doors.

Course selection: The school has an extensive list of courses for students of many ages, all levels and various necessities. In addition to General German taught over several schedules and intensities, GLS Berlin also provides Exam Preparation (TELC, GOETHE, TestDaF), Business German, High School programmes in private boarding or day school, Immersive Junior summer programmes, University Pathway programmes and Intensive German with an internship.

School facilities: The school has a large 16,000 square meter campus with a garden, 66 classrooms, 50 studio apartments, 72 hotel rooms, a restaurant and a cafeteria. In addition to this, there is a basketball court, garden, computer lab and an indoor swimming pool. All classrooms are equipped with electronic whiteboards, heating and ample natural light to create an optimal learning environment.

Getting around: The school is a 110m walk from the Schwedter St. tram stop, giving access to the city centre within 15-20 minutes.

This could almost replace the super-intensive course. Next time, I wouldn’t take the extra hour and a half of the super-intensive course; instead, I’d opt for the two hours of free classes with the future teachers, who are training with students from the school who wish to participate."

“What I liked was that there’s a wide range of ages and skill levels, and that’s a real plus because everyone can progress at their own pace without holding others back. The teachers are very patient and dynamic.”
“The communication about the activities could be improved. Since they're organized by the school, everyone should be informed, but there are almost never any sign-ups. It seems like better organization or communication is needed so that students can participate. In fact, some activities were canceled due to a lack of participants.”
Insider tip: “There are lots of fun activities. Be sure to check the details. Keep in mind that when there are activities, everyone is responsible for their own transportation. Ask if there are enough participants.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: The super-intensive course offers an extra hour and a half. However, there’s an excellent alternative: in the afternoon, there’s a group of “future teachers” who give free lessons. This could almost replace the super-intensive course. Next time, I wouldn’t take the extra hour and a half of the super-intensive course; instead, I’d opt for the two hours of free classes with the future teachers, who are training with students from the school who wish to participate.
Other comments: I don't have any negative comments. I actually thought the courses were very good.

The student info was very good at helping me into a class that was right for my level, and the teachers were then flexible to take in new students at any time. A modern and well-organized program. Convenient app from the school to keep track of classes. Great host family who were eager to speak German with me. In addition, good follow-up from the Language Course people.”

Generally, course material has to be purchased by all students at the school. Course material costs are approximately €20 per month.
Comments about courses

On public holidays, no classes will take place, but workshops that are free for every student to join will be held to make up for it.

In July and August, courses on fringe levels (i.e. absolute beginners and very advanced) may be moved to the afternoon if necessary (15:00 - 18:30). The recreational program is planned so that participants will not miss any activities.

"As for the school's housing, everything was great: clean, quiet, and comfortable. I have no complaints. Staying in the on-campus residence makes everything much easier, since you can go back to your room at any time and come back at noon to grab a bite to eat, which is very convenient.

Why do some courses require ages 17-18?
“If the course specifies an age range, it is for juniors. If no age ranges are specified, it is for adults.
GLS - German Language School offers different courses for juniors. You can see below the course information the number of weeks you can book and the minimum language level you need to reach in order to book the course.
High School Programme-Day School Classic (12 to 18 years old) and High School Programme-Day School Select (12 to 18 years old) can be booked for 8, 12, 16, 20, 40 weeks, you need to be A2 level to book it.”

How many weeks do I have to book if I want to complete a full level of German?
“We teach German at all levels all year round, from beginners to advanced. No matter what level you are in right now, you can start your German course at our school in Berlin any Monday of the year.

Levels A1, A2 and B1 can be completed in 6 weeks (if you book 30 lessons/week) or in 8 weeks if you choose to book 20 lessons/week. The B2 level can also be completed in 6 weeks (if you book 30 lessons/week) but it takes 10 weeks if you choose to book 20 lessons/week.”

“Normally, in schools it is only used the mother tongue of the country that you want to learn / improve, German in this case. If you have problems addressing the staff of the school in German, according to the information they have provided us, some of their staff also speak other languages such as English, Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese. Although, it cannot be 100% guaranteed that someone will be able to communicate with you in your mother tongue while you are at school.”

“The GLS - German Language School doesn't guarantee C2 level group courses, however we usually have C2 level group classes, especially in summer. If an intensive course for adults has less than 5 participants, and a super intensive course or an exam preparation course has less than 4 participants, GLS reserves the right to reduce tuition from 90 to 60 minutes per double lesson.”

Can I take the TestDaF exam after 4 weeks of TestDaF Intensive Prep Course?
“You will need to obtain the tourist visa first in order to take the 4-week course, as you can avoid being charged for the cancellation fees in case of visa refusal.
The school's TestDaF Intensive Prep Course requires a B2 language level in order to register.
The school is also an official examination centre (which is described in the school profile) and you can take the exam at the school after you have completed the course at the school, the cost of the exam and the date of the exam can be found in the course description.”
