Location: Corazón Cuba Havana is located in the capital city of Cuba, Havana. The school is housed in the centre of Old Havana, famous for its colonial buildings, history and culture. The Old Havana neighbourhood is a UNESCO World Heritage site, vibrant with music, art, food and sites of cultural and social interest. Such places within walking distance of the school include the Plaza Vieja, The Havana Club Rum Museum, the National Capitol of Cuba, the Grand Threatre of Havana, several museums and art centres, and much more. There are many eateries, amenities, shops and cafes close to Corazón Cuba Havana.

Course selection: The school provides cultural immersion language learning experiences for adult students of all levels. The various programmes available with Corazón Cuba Havana include lessons, accommodation, some meals (2 per day), excursions, cultural trips and more. These immersive experiences also come in various forms and interests, including Spanish with additional subjects such as volunteering, dance & culture, adventures and more.

Accommodation: The accommodation included in these programmes is in a local hostel, in a multiple-bed shared room.

Social and cultural: Each programme is subject to slight differences in the activities and excursions that are included. Some examples of activities common to all of the programmes include trips to the beach, guided walking tours of Havana and Old Havana, and nights out dancing and socialising.

The first accommodation they proposed to me was on the 5th floor, inappropriate for seniors.
Léo was very kind and offered me different possibilities, so I lived in another building more suitable for me but I was alone. I would have liked to live with other students.

Some pieces of information are missing from the website. I didn't know before arriving there that the accommodation and meals were for 7 days, I thought I needed to organize my stay by myself for the other days.

Finally, I would have liked to speak Spanish in the course and no English for a total immersion.”

Other comments: 1. Classroom size was not proportionate to the number of students: My class contained 14 students which were too many to sit comfortably around the available tables and use the table surface. It was conducted in a room that was too small for that number and was next to a room in which another class was being conducted. All doors and windows were open which means that the sounds from the two classes continually invaded each other's space. Additionally, other students and staff regularly used the classroom as a corridor which was very distracting. 2. Water caused sickness and ultimately hospital treatment: While at Jakera, a number of other students and I became sick, apparently from drinking water from the cooler provided by the school. I remained sick for 5 days and ultimately spent time in hospital. Nobody from the school followed up to see if I needed help. I am a mature person used to self reliance and my husband later joined me in Havana. However, most of the other students are very much younger and would likely need help to navigate foreign systems. 3. Cover-up for an error?: Jakera employees/owners said that the government had announced that the water was less drinkable than usual during the time that students - I believe 5 of us - became sick. No other Cuban I spoke to, including staff at Central Hospital, was aware of such an announcement. I am inclined to believe therefore that this was a cover story and that possibly a staff member forgot to put in the requisite amount of 'disinfectant' that is usually added to the water in the cooler. 4. Excellent teacher: Despite the noisy and overcrowded conditions, my teacher, Pablito, did a very good job indeed during the time I was well enough to attend classes (3 days out of the 5 days booked).

They'll also organise your wider travel for you but it will not be the cheapest way to do it as bargains on accommodation are to be found when you arrive at your destination.”

If you're not sure about dance classes or want a mix of dance and cultural tours in the afternoons just book your language classes & accommodation as you can add on dance & tours later.

Does the school accept payments by card?
“Unfortunately, we do not accept credit cards. Client can pay in advance by bank transfer or cash when they arrive. It is possible to pay balance in EUR or USD and I can do conversion for them. There are lots of cash points in Cuba that don’t work for US banks but work for all other countries including EU countries.”

Is there Wi-Fi available at the school and at the accommodation?
“There is no Wi-Fi but there are Wi-Fi hot spots in the school´s neighbourhood. You can buy a scratch card which costs $1 or €1 per one hour of Wi-Fi or you can pay extra to use Wi-Fi in Internet cafes or hotels. ”

What type of accommodation can you recommend?
“There is a dorm style accommodation where the school offers shared rooms. If you would like to have your own room - which we normally recommend for students aged 30 plus - then the supplement is 10$ per night. This includes a private room with private bathroom, just 2 blocks away from the school.”

Can I have Spanish classes without accommodation?
“We only provide services to clients who are registered as staying with us. Our programmes are amazing value - all programmes include accommodation, breakfast & lunch, Spanish lessons and a welcome walk within 24 hours of arrival to get to know the neighbourhood including location of services such as money exchange and internet services. We also provide airport transfers as required.”
