“Not much. I wanted my parents to pick me up after 3 days as my room mates were all from the same country and speaking between them, they were saying my name and stupid in the same sentence. Language course too easy.”
“The fact that my room mates were all from the same country, they were speaking their language between them and one of them was bullying me.”
Other comments: Lack of concern for the well being of children and communication between them, of making a group out of individuals. Preference for satisfying wishes of large groups rather than children solo.

Questions and answers about Alpadia Summer Camp
I am particularly concerned with the children’ supervision, with issues like the risk of bullying. How many people are supervising the children besides the teachers?
“In most group activities (e.g., during lessons or after-school programs), our staff-to-child ratio is 1:15. This generally means that on excursions, at least two supervisors are responsible for groups of 25–30 children. Our staff are trained in positive behavior promotion and bullying prevention and have in-depth knowledge of social dynamics in youth groups. All have prior experience working with young people – our teachers, of course, teach German, and our group leaders typically bring pedagogical experience from schools, summer camps, and similar settings. Therefore, it is essential that parents speak with their child before the summer holidays to ensure a smooth start. Bullying can be prevented, in particular, if students feel comfortable sharing their negative experiences with our staff on-site. For this reason, it is important that parents also emphasize how crucial it is for their child to always inform us about their feelings.”

My child will be one of the youngest, what is his free time programme?
“The standard afternoon program selection is available in the Camp Guide – it is usually a mixture of local excursions, and sports/arts activities on the campsite. All of our programming is choice-based, meaning that students sign up on Sunday afternoon for the week’s afternoon programmes.”

Are the children allowed to use their mobile phones? At what times?
“Mobile phones are not permitted in the classrooms. Otherwise, pupils are allowed to use their mobile phones. However, we advise against excessive use, as this can detract from the social and emotional learning benefits of a summer camp. Ultimately, the decision rests entirely with the parents and the child. Ideally, discussions before the camp should also clarify when mobile phone use is appropriate and when it is not. Pupils may also hand their mobile phones over to our team for safekeeping; however, we cannot take them away if they do not wish to hand them over.”
Ana, Administration from Alpadia - Apr 24, 2026
How many children are at the summer camp at any one time? Which country do most of them come from?
“We have an average of 60 to 80 students, depending on the week in summer. Around 50% come from other EU countries, 30% from South and Central America, and the rest from all over the world.

Do the children generally speak German outside of class? Or is English the common language used for leisure activities?
“Our aim is to use the target language throughout all activities and to encourage our students to do the same. However, this approach has its limitations, as our activities take place in mixed groups and are based on optional participation. For example, a German teacher accompanying students on a visit to a museum might speak German during the trip. However, if most of the students are at A1 level, their understanding will be severely limited. In such situations (and also in others where safety is a concern – such as when explaining the risks of a sporting activity), the teacher may switch to English to ensure understanding and to ensure that cultural immersion or learning is not compromised by the use of language. We rely on our staff to make these decisions spontaneously. However, the mixed composition of the groups often means that some pupils find exposure to the target language ‘too much’ whilst others find it ‘too little’.
