Venue: The special Greek Easter programme run by Alexandria Institute in Methoni takes place at the Methoni Public School. Methoni is three and a half hours west of Athens on the south west coast of the Peloponnese region of Greece, on the Ionian Sea. Methoni has been settled since antiquity though it changed hands on occasion. The medieval Castle at Methoni, and the town’s clean beaches attract many tourists every year.
Greek Easter: Easter is probably the most popular of all religious festivals in Greece. After the weeks of Lent, and with spring in full bloom or just around the corner, families and friends come together to eat and celebrate with greetings of “Xristos Anesti” and enjoy the usually lovely weather. Most years, Orthodox Easter comes later than its counterpart in other Christian faiths because the Orthodox Church still follows the old Julian Calendar.
The programme: Alexandria Institute’s Greek Easter programme in Methoni runs for two weeks around Easter and is open to students of all levels. Students reside in apartments in Methoni and attend Greek language classes organised at the town’s public school. The programme also includes activities and lectures, as well as tours in the area, all with the aim of teaching students not only the language, but the culture of modern day Greece.
Getting there: The closest airport to Methoni is at Kalamata, which is just over an hour away. It is possible to take a bus from Athens, though not directly from the airport. Direct buses from Athens to Methoni run a couple of times per day and travel time is about five to six hours.
