Positive aspects of school
"Esra is an excellent teacher. Her explanations of grammar and pronunciation are clear and easy to understand. She prioritizes listening and speaking lessons more than writing."
Negative aspects
"Since the paperwork is processed in Istanbul, the information may not be accurate. For instance, I was informed that I did not need a notebook or writing materials on the first day, but they were required in Izmir."
Details of the review
City/place
"Overall, prices in Turkey are relatively high. Furthermore, the yen is weak, so I can't find any bargains. Nonetheless, Izmir is a safe city, and the food there is quite enjoyable."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"Lesson time is short, but the pace is fast, so students require some time for review."

Positive aspects of school
"I liked the homework. I liked that we talked before class in Turkish about how our day was going. There was a nice atmosphere in the school."
Negative aspects
"I wasn’t happy that there were no excursions, and I also didn’t like that we didn’t get to practice the new grammar practically. We never said sentences out loud that included the new grammatical elements."

Positive aspects of school
"Small classes - two to three pupils. Good location, in the centre of town. The textbook used was okay. The teacher was pleasant."
Negative aspects
"Learning material based on the rotating status of the book - you just started where the others were. In other words, the needs or abilities of the individual students were not directly addressed."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"Bring writing materials - these were not provided. And a paper map of the city if you don't want to rely on your mobile phone."
Details of the review
Other comments
"‘Royal’ is pompous and “education centre” (two small rooms) is an exaggeration."
City/place
"I love Izmir - the sea, the breeze, the colourful hustle and bustle, the good food, the friendly atmosphere and simply the friendly Turks. The city doesn't have too many sights, but certainly enough for a week or two."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"All a bit random."
Accommodation
"The hostess was like a friend - took me to visit her family a few times. But I was left alone when I wanted to be. She spoke Turkish to me consistently, even though she could speak German, and helped me a lot. I thought it was good that I lived outside so that I could experience normal Turkish life, including public transport. My room was large, clean, with a balcony. Turkish breakfast and simple home cooking in the evening, in my case vegetarian."

Positive aspects of school
"Since I took my course during off-peak dates, I had my teacher all to myself. Great! The teaching material is much better than what I know from Germany and I can say that the two weeks were a complete success."
Negative aspects
"The school is located in a building in need of renovation, but the classrooms are in order."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"As long as it's still possible, be sure to visit the hills below the fortress with the old historic craftsmen's quarter. And don't be afraid of the stray dogs: they are fed and pampered and are extremely friendly and trusting."

City/place
"Izmir is very beautiful. However, almost all of historic Smyrna, including its historic buildings, was lost in the fire of 1922, and what remains has unfortunately been left to decay for the most part. Efforts are being made to rebuild the remaining historic buildings according to preservation criteria. This will do the city a lot of good."

Positive aspects of school
"I was fortunate that I was the only beginner due to the effects of the Corona and had a dedicated, careful teacher. She was able to include my interests and so the week went by in a flash. I now have a certain overview and can use very simple conversation in everyday life. It would be good if the school had the technical means that you can also hear your own pronunciation."

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"The most important point when learning the language is that you know many words, so that the people in the host country can understand you and you them. As a tourist it is worth to go to Efes in Izmir, to use the Asanör, to go to Kariskaya by Vapur, to visit the ethnological and archaeological museum, and of course the bazar in Kemeralti. The local restaurants also offer very tasty vegetable dishes that you should give a try."
