"The school was excellent. My husband and I learned quite a bit even in a short period of time. We had three different teachers over three weeks but each teacher focused on different are of our language development."
Negative aspects
"It would have been helpful to have a text book instead of just photocopies. We are trying to review for A1 A2 exam and it is harder to review without a text book."

Positive aspects of school
"Our teacher Sara was incredibly nice and funny. We were in a group of 4. I had a lot of fun. Looking back, I realize that as an absolute beginner I should have learned more phrases, I can now list 30 different items of clothing but can't order a coffee. So maybe the focus wasn't on the things I would have thought about in terms of content, but the lessons were really incredibly funny and great. I will definitely do it again."
Negative aspects
"So the focus may not have been on the things I would have thought about in terms of content, but the lessons were really incredibly funny and great. I did 0 afternoon activities because we didn't do any and none were offered. But we didn't ask for them either. All good!"
School's reply
"Dear Caroline, Thanks for your review. We're happy that you enjoyed your course with us. Indeed, sometimes we do not have availability for outdoor lessons. By the way, we do not really do social activities, but outdoor lessons with one of us, teachers, and sometimes we are overwhelmed with work. Also, we need a minimum of 4 students interested in doing these outdoor lessons, which doesn't always happen."

Positive aspects of school
"The teacher (Rita) is able to respond very well to the different learning speeds of the students (there were three of us) and provides varied lessons with lots of information about Portugal and the "mindset" of the Portuguese. I found it perfect! As we were older, it was also quite exhausting with 4 hours per day, but I would still like to come back next year."
Negative aspects
"It wasn't a problem for me, but someone else might have difficulties if they don't speak English. Some explanations are necessary for absolute beginners, which is not possible in Portuguese."

Positive aspects of school
"I loved the experience. Rita is an amazing teacher and the class atmosphere was lovely.
School location is nice, close to city center. Cozy and warm."
Negative aspects
"Before starting classes, maybe it would have been nice to receive, on behalf of the school, a welcoming email. I only received from Languagecourse.net, yet not from Oficina de Portugues.
At the end of the time spent there, also, it would be nice maybe to have a closure discussion, not more than 10 minutes, in which to discuss the level of each student, privately. Also, maybe passing a language level test, before starting day 1."
School's reply
"Dear Antocica, We have corrected that, so thanks for your comment. We send students a placement test with their booking confirmation. As for test levels, most of our students attend courses for 2 weeks, so giving them a proficiency test in their level may be premature and frustrating for such a short period of learning."

"Free coffee from Nespresso machine, free water dispenser, free biscuits and sweets. Dedicated teaching staff. Very centrally located on the second floor without a lift in the city's tourist shopping district, easily accessible by metro, but also on foot."
Negative aspects
"Frustration level extremely high: Too much information and much too fast for beginners (2-4 DIN A4 pages of self-compiled vocabulary and notes, closely written per day plus learning materials copied from textbooks instead of a textbook or self-compiled materials). Not sufficiently geared towards older age groups. Unclear teaching concept for building up basic language skills. Too different levels of participants in the learning group."

Positive aspects of school
"- the boundless commitment of the teachers
- the professionalism of the teachers
- the absolutely optimal level of training of the teachers
- the teachers' ability to tailor lessons to suit the constant fluctuations in student numbers and language levels
- the optimal ability to adapt emotionally, culturally, intellectually, etc. to the needs of the students
- the commitment of teachers, not only professionally but also personally
- the humour: we had so much fun!
- I managed to achieve a B1/B2 in three months and I can't believe it. It's completely crazy... I had absolutely no previous knowledge (apart from French, which helped a lot!)
- the fact that the emphasis is on speaking: the teachers make us talk, talk, talk.
- The rate of direct correction is high, but appropriate - just enough to push you to progress without despairing over the mistakes you make. Here again: optimal. A feat from these teachers!
- A teaching system absolutely appropriate for adults: total autonomy, clear supervision, well-defined objectives and tasks. And just the right amount of redundancy."

Positive aspects of school
"The school was really welcoming and Vanessa worked so hard as our teacher. I enjoyed the classes and made a lot of progress in confidence with listening. It was a nice atmosphere in a class where I felt able to contribute."
Negative aspects
"When I arrived, I was not given any information at all about the timings of sessions, breaks, materials, or programmes for the week. I was just asked to join a class, which took up from where it had left off last week. Some basic information would be helpful. It would also be a massive help for newcomers to label the bell downstairs - I didn't know which one to ring. The classes were mainly conversation with very little teaching which is fine but information that is useful for new clients to know. There is no computer or projector, just photocopied pages from a book. I found the materials not very inspiring and I think if I am investing in a course, I would be prepared to buy a book if it were a useful one. There were no afternoon or evening activities which I don't think was made clear. More information which would be useful. To sum up, the teacher was lovely and knew how to teach Portuguese well but there are some things which the school could do better."

"It's very small - only 2 groups. I thought there would be a level test at the start and several groups but really just beginners and then all the rest in one group. That means in group 2 some people are out of their depth and others are having to wait while things are explained that they already know. I think people should know this setup in advance."

"Thank you to Angela and Vanessa who are excellent teachers and always available, the lessons are very well organised, learning the language is easy but of course you have to work after the lessons and above all learn by heart, especially irregular verbs....but this applies to all languages, it's a must. Private lessons are important to develop listening and speaking skills and to work on weak points. The school is close to Sao Bento station."

"The lessons were very effective with lots of information about the Portuguese language and also about the culture and life in Portugal. It was a very pleasant learning atmosphere. Ângela also talked a lot about herself, so that the lessons were always lively and never boring. Questions could be asked at any time and were always answered very well."

"Vanessa who has been teaching us in the group classes is an excellent teacher and attentive to the students, adapting the classes depending on questions."
Negative aspects
"The level during the first week was a bit too low for me as I have some base in the language, not a complete beginner. I mainly felt that from questions from other students during the classes, most of them were about things I knew, meaning the questions and answers were not useful for me. This can of course happen in group classes, but not in private classes. I haven't tried private classes yet but aim to do so later.
There were no social activities in the first week and nothing announced for this week either."

Quality of teaching / language progress
"I would appreciate it if the methodology of teaching would concentrate more on practicing what we learned instead of teaching us new grammar and lots of new vocabulary almost everyday. However, all teachers were very kind, patient and nice. I also appreciate very much that they let me attend 4 hours per day."

Quality of teaching / language progress
"A small school with a nice staff. I found that the courses
were given a bit quickly for a beginner. The course material could be a little more careful, it is often double-sided photocopies, but where the back was in the opposite direction to the front. I would have preferred to buy the course book. But overall I feel like I have made some progress because as of the second week I started to catch words in the phonetic 'soup' of Portuguese, for example in the subway or in the street. It would be nice to have a room available for reading, doing homework, etc. All in all a very good stay. Thank you to my teachers Angela, Tereza and Rita."
Accommodation
"No meal was provided for in the contract, but my hostess invited me several times for an evening meal, but you have to be vegan. I'm not, but I like to try and it was good. On the other hand, you must not be allergic to cats. She has six and still has four other animals. Occasionally she also keeps dogs for people. All this in perfect order and a very welcoming interior."
